Question Message list shows unread PM's ?

In the User CP, at the bottom of the list of PMs there's a list of status icons, one of which is "unread message". This never shows up on my list, even though I know that the latest PM which I sent could not possibly have been read yet.

Is this a feature (e.g. staff only) or a bug?

If I remember rightly, there's a feature that lets you track if someone has read your PM or not.
I don't think it is enabled for non-staff, though it may be for staff. That's probably why the icon is there.

Those icons only tell you if you have read them. Not if the person you sent them to read them. And you have always read your own messages.

The feature moo is talking about is something different, I just checked it. The few unconfirmed messages also show as "read" in the list.

OK, there may be another feature that could show that the intended recipient has read the message. I know I have seen it on other boards.

Could this be made available? Even if restricted to VIPs ?

I thought about it.

I'm skeptical of the value of being able to track messages, though.

For example, I can currently track messages if I want.
Do I?
No.
I just checked my 'tracked messages' page, and it tells me that I haven't tracked any messages, at least since the last time I cleared my PM folders, and very possibly since ADISC began.

My thinking is this: is it really worth making the website more complicated, for a feature that few people will use?
Even the people who want to know if a message they send is read can simply ask the recipient to reply. That proves that they actually read the message, not just skimmed over it.

If someone doesn't want to tell you that they read your message at all, the software should not force them.

If they don't mind if you know or not, but are too lazy to fire off a quick reply saying they read it... is it really important enough for you to be worked up over?

I suppose it might be useful as a convenience feature. I'm just really not sure how many people would use it (I don't, for example), and so if it would be worth the extra complexity involved in enabling it.

I agree with Moo here; instantly opening and closing the message is a simple get-around. I would not object to an "ignore posts from this person" feature, even though I would never use it.

If it is critical to know if something got through, irc is available.

The only real use of the feature in question I can think of is if you want to retract a post, to unsay it, before it is too late; but rereading your post before sending takes care of that.
